Web Hosting
Websites are hosted on servers, computers which are connected to the Internet, and this service is usually obtained from commercial web hosting companies (or “web hosts”.)
Ideally, you, the client, shouldn’t need to think much about the company which hosts your site – it should simply be up and running properly, which is our job. So to us, the web host is important, because we interact with their servers, and sometimes their humans, on a regular basis. We currently host our clients’ sites with HostGator, a well-established company with an excellent reputation.
Domain Names
A domain name, such as “www.ayersvirtual.com”, is a crucial aspect of your website, and ownership of that name is important as well. Domain names are registered with one of a finite list of Domain Registrars, usually for a period of at least one year, and usually for a reasonable rate of about $15 a year.
You may already own the domain name you want to use for your website. If so, we will simply ask you to continue to maintain the registration on your own, as you already have been, and we will “point” the domain to your new website.
If you don’t yet own a domain for this website, we would be glad to register the primary domain for your new website, in your name. We’ll use GoDaddy.com, and a “.com” domain name currently costs about $15 year. We always register domains in our clients’ own names so that they are the owner of this important property; our clients need to pay the yearly invoices to maintain their ownership.
And as always, if you have any questions about web hosting or domain names, please don’t hesitate to ask us.
